These are global energies of Pluto in Sagittarius or in the 9th House which must be nuanced according to your birth chart, see the article Pluto in birth chart; see also the article on the general interpretation of Pluto.
The planet Pluto is one of the attributes of the Shadow in the chart, as such it can indicate a Projection of this one, especially intellectual projections on “social entities” (political party, club, syndicate, nation, church, etc.), everything that concerns more directly the psychological quest, the depth of spirit, the intensity of primary instincts.
It can materialize a place of upheavals, fear, destruction, fatality, losses, betrayals, darkness, submission, as it is also a vector of passion, domination, power, self-control, creation of purity.
It is often referred to the higher octave of Mars and is directly related to Scorpio.
As Pluto remains from 12 to 30 years per sign (due to the irregularity of its orbit), its position in houses is more meaningful for the personality. The energy of the sign especially gives a common elemental background coloring to a whole generation, which will apply more personally to the life sector signified by the house. Therefore, focus first on the house affected, the sign giving a background tone.
Significant “religious” power
Plutonian energies, like the other different transpersonal forces, for that matter, are much more comfortable in the social hemisphere, and here in this sector they begin to gain the strength to reach their culmination, which is obviously a very powerful position, especially for strengthening the ego and the forces of personal and social influence and radiation.
Here, people’s spiritual side may prove to be quite excessive, on the one hand with access to a great depth of understanding and strong abilities to transform and allow their life philosophy to evolve, but this does not rule out the possibility of expressing nihilistic, destructive tendencies in some cases.
This is the type of positioning that could be experienced differently during different phases of life, for example with fierce atheism, inner violence, and a revolt early on in life, and then as things are activated these people may have to rub shoulders with their destructive and self-destructive sides, but this may also lead them to discover another reality and gain access to “knowledge” in a different way.
These people’s quest for meaning and knowledge may in fact be very important over the course of their incarnation, but it may also occupy a secret, more hidden part of their personality, one that is linked to esotericism, the beyond, and psychic gifts.
Pluto in the 9th house / Sagittarius can give people very significant “religious,” social power (in terms of the degree of force at play in their relationships and how they are able to get the upper hand), and as a result they will have to be careful not to take advantage of this, in particular not dominating and manipulating others, their beliefs, and any weaknesses they have that could be used against them.
Under Jupiter’s rulership, these energies are very inflationary, and in terms of these people’s social integration it will be important to find a way of consciously expressing them, for example through various different “higher studies” (in relation to spirituality, religion, the metaphysical, or any of the various Plutonian domains, such as biology, the atom, the infinitely small, psychology, crime, the magistracy, analyses and investigations, sexuality, etc.), which are all things that may then be transmitted and taught to other people.
Symbolically, with this positioning, one’s personal psychological transformation may come “from abroad,” that is, from a connection with a culture that is different from one’s own (for example as a result of discovering a religion that is different from what one was born into and converting to this new religion).
It may be very important over the course of these people’s lives to at some point go on some sort of initiatory journey or plan a spiritual retreat in an environment that allows them to break completely from the standard codes that they know (countries, places, or regions that are considered to be “Scorpio” may be favored here).
Of course, Jupiter’s transits and activations are important to track over the course of these people’s lives, since these events may directly set the pace for Plutonian perception and expression.
In terms of negatives, these people will have to be wary of notions of fanaticism and extremism (proselytism), which may be more present, and the Sagittarius archetype may also often have an inquisitive facet; we should not forget that in mythology the centaur is half-man, half-animal and that these Plutonian forces tend very much to activate people’s instinctive, bestial side, especially if the rest of their birth chart lends itself to these tendencies as well! And this can be quite dangerous: the inquisitors were convinced that they were working in the name of “good” and God, and thus that they were torturing heretics for their own good.
This is a position that may very much “crystallize” knowledge (these people are convinced that they know “the truth”), but also thus “fix it in place,” almost as though we were taking away the centaur’s mutable forces and openness, which facilitate its ability to adapt to change and evolve, instead favoring ideas that are fixed, hard, stubborn, and thus inevitably more difficult to change except through intense psychological crises (even phases of Depression).
Depending on the aspects formed with the rest of the birth chart, this positioning may paradoxically make it more difficult to access pure mystical forces and may instead very much favor all of religion’s flaws, with religious powers getting involved in politics, using propaganda, and manipulating, dominating, and exploiting the masses to benefit a small “caste” that is pulling the strings (using their authority this way, while claiming that they are invested in some divine power, is something that I believe to be the worst possible combination, the worst mask, and the most fearsome situation that could ever be created).
These people’s search for power may be very intense and uncompromising, and it may have an “unhealthy” side where their tendency to dominate brings with it responsibilities, a risk of misuse (of their authority, strength, or intelligence), and a potential lack of openness and tolerance. Even though their animal side is very powerful, this positioning’s forces of sublimation are only that much more powerful as a result, especially in terms of wisdom.
It is also important to be careful during travel, as this planet is known to be a planet of destruction and fatality, and so delicate life phases may occur during these periods of time.
Pluto retrograde in the 9th house and Sagittarius
Retrograde motion here tends to accentuate the secretive, hidden, and crafty side of these energies.
Retrograde motion of Pluto in a birth chart is much less important than for other dominant features of a birth chart, since, as it is a very slow, transpersonal planet, it is retrograde for much of the year.
Nevertheless, it is helpful to monitor the evolution of this retrograde motion through Progressions; a change of state here will not necessarily lead to a specific, noteworthy event, but it may still be an indication of a non-negligible psychological change in how this planet’s energies are used.
