The Conjunction : Unity
Since traditional astrology, the Conjunction is reputed to be the strongest aspect, matter of fact, a major aspect. It symbolizes both the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one.
Initially, the Conjunction is neutral. That is to say precisely that, whatever the planets in question, there is ambivalence.
It can be “tinted” according to the planets concerned, depending on the other Aspects present, according to all the dominants of the chart, be more harmonic (producing a passive comfort) or more dissonant (causing an active tension).
A Harmonic Conjunction does not necessarily prejudge its quality, it can tend towards a letting go and immobility.
Conversely, a Dissonant Conjunction does not necessarily indicate a “problem”, but can positively bring about the necessary action.
Note that we speak of a “dissociated conjunction” when it operates within different signs, which obviously splits the elemental influences of the planets and therefore potentially makes it “less harmonic”.
The Conjunction fundamentally represents the principle of unification, which values the completed realization (Applying Conjunction), which carries within it the seed that will generate a new cycle (Exact Conjunction), which initiates future creation (Separative Conjunction).
The Conjunction is a vector of unity or synthesis, of fusion of planetary energies.
By this principle of unification, it is therefore often a vector of conciliation of opposites, and complementarity of opposites, it symbolizes a certain balance of “couples”.
It should be noted that there are frequently Conjunctions of several planets (called Stellium), which complicates this fusion of energies by subtle nuances, further complicating the interpretation.
But it must be understood that the process of Conjunction may not be “tolerated”, or at least pose integration problems, and unification will therefore tend on the contrary towards rejection, a repulsion leading to a “big gap” of energies, motivating separation and blockage (just as oil and water regain their separation after they are mixed).
These integration problems of the Conjunction can manifest themselves directly in the birth chart (like a subjective native psychological hindrance) or during transits in the birth chart (in the manner of an imposed objective constraint), or even both at the same time. The Conjunction will require either a “letting go” or, on the contrary, a channelling of forces.
As a conclusion, let’s have an example to illustrate the energies involved during a Conjunction, try to picture two musical instruments playing together side by side :
- if they manage to tune their partition (from the Latin “partitio”, sharing), the composition produces a harmonious and pleasant melody, a good energetic integration…
- if everyone pulls the blanket over oneself and aims at total control, we would quickly find a cacophony, the tension is continuously but alternately exerted in one direction and then in another, until an energetic dominance is fatally established threatening the other energy with crushing, absorption or inhibition…
Advice for living the Conjunction :
It is primarily necessary to clearly identify the value and the dominance of the energies manifested, this is done through their implantation in sign, in house, according to their elemental energies, their Mode, but also obviously of the different Planetry Rulerships of the planets involved, their possible dignity or not which will indicate their global power in the chart.
Once these energies have been identified, it is advisable to channel them, to succeed in externalizing them at best simultaneously. The simultaneity notion can be important to manage because these energies necessarily have things to do together, to tell each other, to experiment, to understand…
If simultaneous externalization is not possible (because of too many conflicts for example, too many difficulties to manage forces at the same time), it is advisable to split the present forces and to seek their externalization through their respective rulerships and so alternately (on what can such a planet rely to assert its strengths or conversely avoid its problems ?).
During the various updates, in Progressions as well as in Transits of everyday life, certain positions will obviously be more sensitive :
- the most sensitive of all will be any conjunction (beginning of cycle) which will be applied on it, awakening these energies directly and frontally, asking to work on them, to express them…
Here, it’s quite important to analyze the meaning of conjunction, which planet will be actualized first and when the next one will be, this can provide a meaning to the interpretations that can be drawn from it and a temporality ! - the second most sensitive will be the position that directly faces the conjunction, which therefore corresponds to an aspect of Opposition ( mid-cycle), this type of influence will have the task of symbolically “bringing things to light”, making us aware of the “energy nucleus” of the joint planets present in the birth chart.
- then come the positions of increasing and decreasing Square (quarter cycle), they represent on the energies jointly involved together, a step to climb for the first one, a test and tension phase, and an integration phase for the second one, a need for restructuring
- at the Trine (1/3 cycle), the conjunction can benefit from a harmonic phase allowing an expansion (increasing phase) or a recognition / harvest (decreasing phase)
- the conjunction being in some way “the root aspect”, the planets present there cannot form a figure on their own, but they will be able to be receptive together simultaneously to all received aspects and will also be able to form a point of a figure with transits!
For example, it will be able to form a relay point at the apex of a T-square, a Kite, a large harmonic rectangle (Mystic Rectangle), a Yod, a basket, etc… And then the result obviously becomes particularly energetic !
Note that the Stellium is a large planetary cluster, a kind of “big conjunction” involving several planets at once and can spread out in a larger way, it is therefore to be analyzed as a “figure” and not as a single aspect of conjunction.
