Uranus in Astronomy

An icy gas giant 50 000 km in diameter, 14 times more massive than the Earth, Uranus is at the limit of terrestrial visibility to the naked eye. This planet is after Saturn in terms of distance from the Sun.
In appearance Uranus seems very wise, without any particular sign, of a uniform electric blue color, without a cloud layer…
What distinguishes Uranus, it is the only planet of the solar system whose axis of rotation is at the level of the equator, (perpendicular to that of the Earth) : in clear the planet presents alternately its poles to the Sun and in a way “rolls” on its orbit, each pole being exposed 42 years to the Sun, that is to say half of its revolution period…
This phenomenon could be due to the extreme inclination of its magnetic field, which is moreover uneven and does not originate from the center of the planet but would be caused by shallow movements at the level of the gas oceans.
Its atmosphere is composed of hydrogen and helium, water, ammonia and methane, at an icy temperature close to -330°F / -200°C and with winds of up to 900 km/h.
It is speculated that its core is composed of iron in particular and is as massive as the Earth.
However Uranus gives off little internal heat and little radiation.
Uranus has more than 20 small moons known to date, as well as a ring system (like Saturn).
Its formation is enigmatic (like that of Neptune), it is supposed that Uranus could have formed near the Sun then would have migrated gradually towards its current location.

Uranus, astrological planet

First collective transpersonal planet coming after the social planets (Mars, Jupiter and Saturn), Uranus means the revolt, surprise, originality, freedom, progress, change, modernity, reformationand the fights that goes with it !
Its energy is as oscillating as it is sudden and unanticipated.
Its dynamic is often radical, breaking, extremist, even “anarchic” (in appearance). Its gait is both individualistic but social.

Uranus, makes us waver on our bases, it shakes our convictions, our foundations, to force us to change, to lead to more independence and freedom, to affirmation and surpassing oneself in the process of Individuation.

Uranus is also the visionary flash, the genius and its forward-looking perceptions, its ideas, intuitions and its creative inspiration which lead to inventions, discoveries, major works (material, spiritual or artistic)… As such the planet often initiates the alchemical process of “sublimatio” with Jupiter.

Uranus is Mercury’s superior octave, Uranus relies on its intellect and its mind to transcend personality and to reveal us.Uranus comes somehow interrupting Saturn’s stability, the planet being without concession to the ego creation carried out so far, it takes us out of our comfort to plunge us into doubt and uncertainty, long term creative.

Uranus pushes us to adventure, to overcome our fears to gain our freedom, with the Uranian energies we prefer “anything and everything” rather than staying in the status quo ! We are fascinated by the perspectives of the unknown to come, the future, and repelled by present and ancient past that we find sclerotic, all the old values are bland and dusty…
In these trials that the planet imposes on us, where we sometimes have the impression to suffer the external fatalities, where the pitfalls sometimes progress for a long time in a hidden underground way (a bit like Pluto), we only notice the progression and the real impacts of Uranus once all the puzzle’s pieces are in place and only then do we understand the final goal… What we thought was an unjust ordeal imposed on us was a fight for our liberation, this incoherent chaos was not so incoherent and chaotic at its core.

This exaltation produced by Uranus can also be sublimated and lead to altruism first, then to spiritual illumination. But it can also in the extreme lead to irrationality and madness, with Uranus it’s often a roller coaster, of the unexpected and unpredictable.

As a slow, heavy or even collective planet, it marks whole generations (like Neptune and Pluto) and often signs revolutions or civilizations’ and world’ great upheavals (for example the Uranus entry in Aries, coinciding almost perfectly with the Japan’s tsunami and nuclear accident in Fukushima on March 11, 2011).

Uranus in your Birth Chart indicates the place of freedom, independence, surprise and inspiration, its extravagance, even the native’s transcendental faculties. Uranus can also indicate the friendships and collective projects, the rapport to progress and the native’s visionary side.

Uranus in Birth Chart :

Uranus in Sign “returns” in some way the archetype of consciousness, the sign’s character will be lived in an extroverted way and/or in any case in an unconventional way.

Uranus in Houses will give the activity field where revolt, freedom, autonomy, the “out of the ordinary” place where unplanned>/strong> can reign at all times, where revolution is possible and even probable.

In Aspect, Uranus “electrifies” the other planets, Uranus brings them its renewal capabilities and a certain hardness and intransigence.
In transits, Uranus is often the crisis “detonator”. The activations or actualizations of fast-moving planets acting as potential primers.
In the 2 cases Uranus can produce emotional, psychic and mental instability, it triggers disturbances (and sometimes Depression).

The Uranus’ cycle is a true transformative groundswell throughout human life.
Over the 84 years of its revolution, the first increasing Square intervenes around the age of 21 years old and its Opposition around the age of 42 yearsold, as many crisis periods, of destabilization and of questioning through various and varied unforeseen events that strengthen the process of Individuation towards more freedom. In particular, the Mid-cycle Opposition, which corresponds roughly to the middle of life, is synonymous of metamorphosis, as its strength is so close in its symbolism to a new birth or “enlightenment” (like a full moon), a new perception of life from A to Z for a renewal… As so often, the best solution is the integration of Uranian values, acceptance, letting go…

Uranus as transpersonal collective planet (the first one), does not have the same impact as the individual inner planets or the social planets, its retrograde motion must therefore also be looked at from this angle, even if its interpretation in a Birth Chart is not forbidden for that matter !

In Birth Chart, Uranus Retrograde indicates an introversion of Uranian values (freedom, revolt, autonomy), maybe less extroversion and more intuition, but in any case, the planet keeps all its faculties to astonish and surprise us : originality, radically, unconventional vision, and risk of sudden impulsivity because the tension is more repressed than in Uranus Direct.
Watch for its direct motion resumption in Progression.
However, as a slow planet, the retrograde motion in birth chart is less significant.

In transit, its retrograde motion of a little more than 5 months per year signs a period where one finds the tendencies to versatility and inversion of Uranus, this period can correspond as much to a period of calm, lucidity and assimilation of the Uranian function in general -which is the most frequent case-, but it can also correspond to an unforeseen event, a break-up, a liberation, a rebellion, a desire for freedom of expression or even a different kind of expression, or even a kind of turning back, a psychological, mental, emotional or subjective “backtracking”…
Do not forget, that being a slow planet, the same chart’s points will often be activated several times during its slow transit in a sign or a house, the transit unfolding thus taking place in several phases.
Astronomically, the retrogradation arc of the outer exterior planets corresponds to an Opposition to the Sun (tension with the will), Uranus being thus as close as possible to the Earth, it is advisable to watch the loop development.
Once again, all this depends on its function in the chart and in transit, as well as on the Birth Chart dominants (study concerned Houses, other Aspects and transits…).

Uranian personality traits

A native whose chart will be strongly marked by Uranus will have qualities of originality, eccentricity, marginality, independence, willpower, speed, combativeness, audacity, fraternity, altruism, idealism, abnegation, inventiveness, intuition, even genius…

Of magnetic and charismatic aspect, the native can be attracted by modernity, inventions, novelties, means of communication, transport machines, conquest of space, computer science, advertising, electricity, political opposition, cinema, and… astrology !

Negative Uranus : exuberant, extravagant, provocative, irrational, misunderstood, excessive, impulsive, brutal, intransigent and intolerant, cold and insensitive, indulging in scandal, enjoying their madness…

Character traits found in Aquarius (its Domicile).

In the circle of life, Uranus does not correspond to a particular age, but is a sign of states of transcendence (like Neptune and Pluto).

Uranus in mythology was inspired by Ouranos the God of sky, see Ouranos on Wikipedia
