Jupiter in astronomy
Jupiter is the largest, most voluminous and massive planet in the solar system, a gas giant.
Its mass is 2.5 times greater than all the other planets combined, it has a diameter 11 times greater than the Earth.
This immense mass had a great gravitational influence on the entire formation of the Solar System by shaping it.
Even today, Jupiter acts as a real “gravity well” attracting comets in frequent impacts, the planet is nicknamed “the vacuum cleaner of the Solar System”. Jupiter has the strongest magnetic field in the solar system, 14 times stronger than the Earth’s.
Jupiter is a kind of mini-sun inside the solar system… its huge mass creates a gravitational effect that has managed to capture numerous moons (67 known including the 4 Galilean moons some as big as Mercury) and several asteroids.
The planet Jupiter radiates more energy than it receives from the Sun. It produces an amount of internal heat almost greater than that captured by the Sun.
The planet Jupiter has often been called “failed sun”, but it is still far from our Sun, it would need tens of times its current mass to start a form of atomic hydrogen fusion.
Composed of hydrogen and helium -like the Sun-, violent winds of nearly 600 km/h run across its surface. Its “big red spot” is moreover an anticyclone which could contain 3 planets Earth…
The reasons for the color of Jupiter are still mysterious, but the clouds vary in hue and width over time.
It is assumed that this planet has a dense and massive core equivalent to 12 times the Earth’s mass. It is speculated that Jupiter has no solid surface but it could contain a rocky core.

Jupiter, astrological planet
Jupiter is social expansion, both in its material and socio-professional aspect, as well as spiritual.
Jupiter is the sociability with respect to the collective entity, the social integration within the group and the resulting mutual cooperation, the individual’s maturity process, the magnetism and the charisma within the community.
Jupiter is a growth phase, it’s the success and the accomplishment that concludes the desire phase, of affirmation and struggle of Mars, it’s the material comfort, the wealth, the honors, the social advent…
Jupiter is sitting on the intelligence and relational foundations of Mercury to build its integration into the community and to continue the accomplishment of the primordial solar force.
First slow -or heavy- planet coming after the “individual” fast planets, it is called “social” and “collective” , it is nicknamed in traditional astrology the “great beneficial” , so much it is synonymous with success, harvest, protection and luck (and Venus the “little beneficial” ).
But there is also the Jupiter’s excessive face, its “always more” side, the exaggeration, Jupiter is the exponential curve, which at best produces an extravagance and a self-satisfaction due to the harvesting of its constant, shimmering benefits, and at worst leads to forward leakage, disruption, uncontrolled proliferation, eccentricity, megalomania and finally anarchy… At this point, Jupiter basically needs limits and restrictions that it will soon find with Saturn.
A quick digression : Our current consumer society is like that. It is the full reflection of a Jupiter who refuses to have imposed limits : a desire for perpetual economic growth, depletion of natural resources with no concern for long-term management, exponential demographic expansion…
The next phase in the evolution of our societies will be to integrate the Saturn’s function, willingly or unwillingly, it is the logic of nature’s cycles…
Jupiter is the moral, law, and justice, in the sense of the principles that order society and make its cohesion against chaos, these principles drawing their meaning directly from mysticism and religion (our current Law is nothing less than an accumulation of reworked religious moral principles).
Jupiter can be sublimated, it corresponds to the beginnings of transpersonal planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto), of non-duality, of return to absolute unity. In this sense it is expansion of consciousness, metaphysical questioning, the religious process maturation (from Latin “religare”, connecting the social) and it can help here during a Depression. This planet can allow to transcend the social consciousness into absolute consciousness. It is the “sublimatio” of the alchemical process with Uranus.
In a Birth Chart, Jupiter has a great importance both on the character (even more for Sagittarius and Pisces personalities) and to inform about the insertion in society.
It potentially indicates one’s type of studies, one’s pedagogical faculties, or clues about the trade as well as various activities to be carried out in society.
Jupiter in signs amplifies the energy of the sign archetype consciousness, which then makes available to the collective, it imprints the social attitude of the native’s personality.
As in the astronomical sense mentioned above, in the astrological sense also Jupiter is a mini-sun, a second Sun, more material, less absolute, which guides the social achievement.
Jupiter in houses will indicate the sector of activity where the collective is valued, where luck smiles, where sharing, generosity and benevolence are the most operative. It is a sky sector, place of good omens, abundance, fulfillment, optimism, altruism…
In Aspect and in transits (see Jupiter in transit), Jupiter makes a “magnifying glass effect”, the energies and functions concerned are magnified, amplified, sometimes to the extreme even deformed…
The Jupiter’s transits give rhythm to the socio-professional aleas and sign the progression and the social and collective failures of the native’s integration in the society (progression officially and unofficially, sometimes also with law or justice problems).
Its 12 years cycle must be monitored (notably first increasing Square, Opposition, decreasing Square, etc) its return to the native Sun often signs a period of harvest or at least of individual, material and/or spiritual expansion (at 12 years old, then 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96…)
The increasing Square intervenes at 3 years old, the Opposition at 6 years old, the decreasing Square at 9 years, then the Conjunction at 12 years old…
Jupiter retrograde tends to express itself under the colors according to its second sign of rulership, Pisces.
The Jupiter Retrograde in Birth Chart can mean an emphasis on the inner success, psychological and philosophical (inner fullness), the humility, the introversion (more individualistic), an interiorization of the sociability’s functions (less generous materially, less casual, but more pedagogical in sharing knowledge), a character strength, maybe cooperation ifficulty, a delay in growth or expansion, material problems (less conservative in all respects), learning difficulties…
Watch for its direct motion resumption in Progression.
However, as a slow planet, its retrograde motion in Birth Chart is less significant.
In transit, its Retrograde motion lasts about 4 months per year, signs a period of social internalization in general, an expansion stop, a socio-professional break, a withdrawal, or even a marginalization. Introversion can be psychological and emotional.
Ideal period for philosophical quest, a revelation, work on oneself, creative inspiration, preparation of future projects, re-evaluation of one’s environment and social values.
On the other hand, it is a period of delay for business, travel, justice.
Do not forget that astronomically, the retrograde arc of the exterior planets (outer planets) corresponds to an Opposition to the Sun (tension with our will), Jupiter being therefore as close as possible to the Earth, it is advisable to watch the loop development.
Impact to be determined according to its function in the Chart and in the transit, as well as the dominants of the Birth Chart (study concerned Houses, other Aspects and transits…).
Jovien personality traits
A native whose chart will be strongly marked by Jupiter will have qualities of excessiveness, generosity, optimism, humor, sympathy, warmth, charm, elegance, vitality, open-mindedness, benevolence, even philanthropy…
Carefree, often epicurean, the native is player with a tendency to be adventurous, but he cares about his material well-being, he doesn’t like to be cramped both physically and psychologically, and he appreciates the great outdoors.
Professions in phase with Jupiter often have to do with wealth, law, medicine : lawyer, judge, doctor, banker, professor, clergy or religious in general, politicians too, all people in the limelight, sometimes also professions related to children (for the game).
Negative Jupiter : tendency to exaggeration, pretentiousness, megalomaniac, boastful, frivolous, eccentric, playful, conformism…
Character traits found in Sagittarius and Pisces (their Domiciles).
In the circle of life, Jupiter represents the age of maturity and experience, from about 55 to 70 years old, from pre-retirement and early retirement, rest, when the native can take advantage of the socio-professional achievements of his career and devote himself to leisure and his interests.
Jupiter in mythology is inspired by Zeus the supreme God, see Zeus on Wikipedia
