Summary of an Astrological Forecast Study

This type of study aims to help you fulfill your birth chart as fully and serenely as possible in the present. It describes the different planetary cycles you will go through over the coming months (much like a map and a compass), often taking the time to place them within broader past cycles to improve your understanding and to help you perceive where their roots lie…

With astrological forecasts, we approach the part of astrology that is subject to the most misunderstandings and fantasies, unfortunately much perpetuated by the media and some astrologers who always insist on mixing astrology and fortune-telling.

Astrology and the nature of “predictions”

I am not fond of the commonly used term “predictions” because, although etymologically correct, it too often fosters in the public mind the idea that astrology is purely divination. Astrology is above all a material knowledge subject to interpretation, which can give the student perspectives for personal transformation and help to orient one’s life.

Astrology cannot predict events with absolute precision, but it describes correspondences and analogies that exist between, on one hand, planetary configurations and on the other hand, external objective events or internal subjective events (purely psychological, psychic, metaphysical developments).
In other words, astral configurations are indicators of both personal and social transformations, and of the psychological changes that accompany them.

Astrology tells us the phases of cycles, indicating the influences that will preside over certain periods of our evolution.
Its psychological value is decisive, more than its capacity to “predict”; it’s what helps the individual become aware of “who they are” and “what is happening to them”, as well as “what they should do”.

Astrological forecasts help build a better way of being; they assist in determining when and how to develop new approaches to life and when and how we will be tested to see whether our developed approaches are truly constructive, creative and meaningful.

An individual can thus live in harmony with the rhythms of the universe !

In this respect, astrology helps individuals gain and develop greater self-confidence. It can confirm inner feelings and knowledge they feared to express or trust (intuitions, aspirations).

The value of astrology and its “forecasts” is primarily psychological; it lies in helping people become aware of their Being more than in precisely describing events.

Astrological Predictive Techniques

For those who want a better understanding, so-called “astrological predictions” are mainly based on the interplay of five major complementary astrological techniques which, ideally, should be cross-referenced for better results and greater precision.

Each of them addresses the same phenomena from a different angle, each contributes to interpretation. In a vision of holistic humanist astrology as I practice, they cannot be completely separated without ultimately reintegrating them all into the whole of the personality under study.

• 1- the Birth Chart: by date, time and place of birth, it provides a snapshot of the fundamental tenor of the being, the ultimate aim and purpose of their life, their “absolute substance of Being”. It contains the referential fundamental basis of all astrological data composing the individuality; it’s the initial root that constitutes the “beginning”, the first referential breath, the foundation to which one always refers.
• 2- the Secondary Progressions and Primary Directions: symbolic techniques relating to inner development and becoming, they indicate with relative precision the different phases of Individuation and self-assertion; they mark the progressive realization of the Self at the psychological level and help date certain driving forces acting in the background.
• 3- Solar and Lunar Returns: this is the chart erected annually (or monthly for the Moon) at the exact return of the Sun to the same degree, either for the current place of residence or for the place of birth (depending on what one seeks or prioritizes).
  The returns are then compared to the birth chart (I never study them separately myself); they indicate for the coming year where the annual transit influences will focus in the subject’s life, and, where appropriate, the duration of these influences (useful if one feels they are experiencing a crisis in the present to better determine its timeframe).
  The lunar return is useful for short-term monthly analyses. It concerns the second luminary, the Moon, and therefore more daily life, sensitivity of the moment, intuition, versatility, imagination, the unconscious, while allowing focus on fast moving transits.
• 4- Transits: they indicate the present planetary configuration, the “external influences”; they accentuate sectors of the birth chart. Often synchronous with external events, they modulate the personality’s content but do not structurally change it; they trigger reactions that enable the individuation process to unfold.
  They represent the intended or imposed impact of the outside social world on the inner personal world, functioning as obstacles to overcome or experiences to assimilate; they question the structure of the birth chart to “force” evolution. They are the growth pattern of the personality with various cyclical phases whose durations can be estimated. Transits actualize birth potentialities, demanding special attention “here” or imposing social and personal constraints “there”.
• 5- Horary Astrology: this is a divinatory astrology that operates on the same model as Tarot or the I Ching; it interprets astrological signs synchronously in a chart erected for the moment of a question (astrology is a permanent synchronicity). Practically, it answers a specific question based on a chart for the moment (I sometimes use it depending on the context).

The astrologer Dane Rudhyar in his book “The Astrology of Personality” states:
“Sometimes the life of the native will be very precisely circumscribed through the birth chart or the directions which are the extension of its structure in time. Other times it will be thanks to transits, secondary progressions and solar returns, while the birth chart will remain inoperative.
From this one might deduce that introverted and highly individualized subjects are faithful to their birth chart and not to their progressions; while the opposite is true for extraverted subjects conditioned by the collective…”

He further adds that this is not always so simple. The deeply transformative nature of transits makes them painful for introverts, while primary directions often constitute a continuous ordeal for extraverts.

These different forecasting techniques are complementary, hence the interest of cross-checking their interpretations.
For my part, in my forecast studies, I always include at least an analysis of secondary progressions, the solar return, and transits (long, short, and karmic).

Astrological Interpretation and the Client’s “Stage of Evolution”

The use of the above predictive techniques depends on the “stage of evolution” of the client. By “stage of evolution” we mean the person’s phase of individuation, the step of “understanding reality” where their personality stands at the given moment.

In humanist astrology developed notably by D. Rudhyar (based on humanist psychology), there are four different levels of understanding. We can say that astral influences act differently at each of these levels and will be subject to nuances in their interpretation:

• Biological, physiological, primitive level: the base level of Maslow’s pyramid covering all physiological needs, breathing, drinking, eating, sleeping, security, reproduction…
• Socio-cultural level: the need for exchange with others, to act and react with one’s environment, to integrate into the collective, to gain societal recognition, to be appreciated…
• Individual level: asserting oneself within the group; the individual emerges for their qualities and is recognized and appreciated for them; they seek self-confidence and the respect of others to confirm their individuality; they love and seek to be loved for themselves…
• Transpersonal level: individuation, the search for Self, giving meaning to things; the individual becomes aware of the transcendent dimension of life; their metaphysical quest leads them toward mysticism…

None of these phases is better or worse than another; we all live at any moment a mix of these four phases. The aim for each person is primarily to live and integrate each phase well, each stage of evolution experienced at the given moment.

Let us be clear that this evolution is perpetual; our life consists of a succession of moments demanding integration, assimilation, and maturation…

Determining the level of assimilation of the person allows delivering a forecast and advice closely aligned with their phase of evolution. Indeed, if the birth chart is the basic reference upon which all research is based, the blueprint used for construction, it’s necessary to respect chronology: for the client’s good, not everything is necessarily good to know immediately. Each thing must be lived at the proper time and will be; it’s the astrologer’s job to discern these elements.

For example, an adolescent’s birth chart may very well indicate a highly social activity as their ultimate life aim, but progressions and transits will clarify that it’s not yet the time to express it; they must go through a phase of withdrawal, interiorization, and introspection first.
This phase, far from being a mere “gadget”, is fully necessary for the complete expression of their chart and for integrating and ultimately realizing the birth chart!

Trying to force the chart’s expression prematurely is not only useless but can prove counterproductive and even dangerous in the individuation process.

All human lives are tortuous and prove it at every moment. In other words, the client’s needs at the given moment must imperatively condition any predictive analysis.
There is no point in indicating the finality of a path that an individual has not even begun, nor even perhaps only had the idea of starting today !

My Astrological Forecast Consultation

By varying the predictive techniques mentioned above, I establish an “astrological forecast for about one year”.
This does not prevent me from addressing deeper background transits or going back in time to study with you past progressions and transits !

Why go back in time for future forecasts ?
Simply because what you are right now is the fruit of past astrological cycles. Studying only the present and the birth chart without examining the course that the person has followed, the trials and steps that led them to live their individuality up to the present moment, deprives us of certain keys to understanding.
It’s necessary to determine the client’s stage of individuation; thus, one should first study the progressions of the past years, which make it possible to determine the inner pathway, how the becoming has been driven up to now, and, where appropriate, to try to determine where it’s heading.

In this type of forecast analysis, I like to split into three distinct interpretations, or rather three different approaches that are fundamentally complementary but can sometimes also be contradictory: short term, medium term, long term.

• Complementary because this gives depth to the analysis; it allows the individual to situate themselves in the timeframe of a life.
• Contradictory because the long-term aim often conflicts with the short-term aim.

Not all clients approach their forecast interpretation in the same way; they do not expect the same things from it.

It’s the crucial role of the astrologer to determine here which of these axes will be most beneficial to the client; knowing that something beneficial in the long term may not necessarily be so in the short and medium term, or vice versa, it’s very difficult to weigh these aspects in forecasts…

I tend to systematically favor analysis of the short and medium term over approximately one year, while “orienting” as best as possible toward longer deadlines… Here again, the exchange with the client before or after the consultation allows us to determine together their expectations, what they are ready to understand, what they can truly change, where they must wait…
