To understand what a karmic study is (and what it’s not) one must first understand what Karma is in astrology.
All astrology is fundamentally “karmic” because all life is karmic: karma is a universal law applying to everyone and everything — a relationship of causes and effects — even if one is not consciously aware of it. It directly shapes our entire existence…

I do not focus too much on “past life” considerations, as I believe they are often counterproductive and not necessary for our present evolution, largely secondary in most cases (see Astrology and Metaphysics where I expand on this idea).

Karmic Significators and Evolution…

A karmic study is based on an in-depth analysis of the main karmic significators: the Lunar Nodes, the Black Moon, the transpersonal planets, the birth retrograde planets and their evolution through progressions, the asteroid Chiron, sometimes the intercepted signs for the clues they may provide, as well as planetary rulerships and the rulers of karmic factors, and certain relevant transits…

The lunar nodes are extremely important in this analysis.

Too often, the approach of some astrologers simply leads to repressing the natal South Node in order to rush “at all costs” toward the North Node… Beyond the fact that this practice lacks basic reflection, it’s often counterproductive — even harmful — for the native !

In the birth chart, far from denying the South Node, one must instead rely on it, accept it, even cultivate it if necessary. The South Node is a place of “skills” and “mastery”; it represents — in principle — what we naturally understand and handle best in this incarnation.
The South Node is the foundation upon which everything else is built…

How can one build anything if one keeps starting from zero, denying fundamental inherited reality — our past — or even feeling guilty about it?

Certainly, one must avoid excess and not remain stuck in rigid habits that the South Node can generate… but the chart can show the risk of such tendencies (every chart is unique). As always, acting with intelligence is the rule, as well as patience toward oneself and toward life in order to truly grow (the famous Buddhist concept of “befriending oneself”).

This is an obvious and elementary principle when speaking of karma…

The North Node must reveal itself naturally to the individual. It’s only once one has reached the necessary maturity (often through mistakes) that the native truly grasps the meaning of the nodal axis, never before ! One cannot force karmic or spiritual evolution with a hammer. A seed takes time to grow into a tree, and the North Node often represents an initially “obscure” area of life that we do not naturally understand or feel affinity with.

The Black Moon acts here like a compass needle showing the way. At once a seed of incarnation and a point to be sublimated, it represents forces of attraction/repulsion and the overcompensations linked to them.

Its analysis must be combined with the transpersonal planets — primarily Pluto, then Neptune, and Uranus — which accompany both Depression and the Quest for meaning (two sides of the same coin!).

Going Beyond the Karmic Analysis

For those wishing to deepen their karmic study, it may also be valuable — depending on the case — to analyze past transits of the black moon and the lunar nodes by tracing them empirically, almost like an “archaeological” investigation, to identify across time the sensitive karmic points of the birth chart.

To extend this kind of research, it’s also highly insightful to study the birth charts of parents (grandparents, father, mother, children) to detect similarities and oppositions that “mark” the family, where the “astral knots” lie : a real investigation! Surprising, rich, and tremendously clarifying in understanding others. Astrogenalogy often reveals deep, complex, longstanding family patterns, frequently connected to the expression of the animus and anima, affecting the individual at their core…

In a karmic analysis of a birth chart, traditional astrological dominants can sometimes be radically transformed !
Factoring in the influence of the lunar nodes and black moon can change many things, but always enriches the fundamental base. It’s simply a different analytical perspective…

The classical birth chart study can, of course, touch on these karmic significators, though not always in depth (depending on the chart). Moreover, I truly believe that not everyone is ready for this type of karmic consultation, at any time or in any manner.

The difficulty of a karmic consultation is that the client must understand that it’s a path to integrate and apply over the course of an entire lifetime ! In a world that constantly demands the “instantaneous,” it’s not easy to perceive a logic unfolding over years — even decades — or sometimes even many decades… Most people struggle to plan their week ! 🙂

If you are currently “entangled” in short-term issues, you must first “untie those knots” and work on yourself daily before tackling long-term karmic considerations. Not only would such insights be useless in the moment, but they might even confuse you (a deeper look at your present predictive cycles will be much more helpful for identifying the nature and timing of your current crisis). The notion of “timing” and the nuances it brings is therefore essential to keep in mind for any karmic consultation.

I especially recommend this consultation to those who already have a “certain age” — meaning a certain spiritual maturity — or who have birth configurations with strongly and directly karmic influences, or favorable current transits, but above all a true desire for long-term change and evolution along a path of Individuation…
