It is common, when learning astrology, to go through a phase of intense doubt.
This period, although destabilizing, often marks a decisive turning point in a student’s journey: the moment where pure theory confronts the phenomenological reality of lived experience (see my complementary article “how to know if you are progressing in astrology?”).
The dilemma is as follows: how should one react when classical interpretations (presented to us as established truths) seem to be in blatant contradiction with our own experience ?
Why can a conjunction said to be universally “benefic” in traditional astrology engender a period of heaviness, while a tension aspect seems to act as a powerful lever for achievement ?
To answer this fundamental question, it is necessary to move beyond the ready-made surface interpretations found in books and dive into the structural complexity of the birth chart.
The trap of isolated interpretation: the importance of a holistic vision
One of the first errors in astrological analysis consists of dwelling on a single planetary aspect while disregarding the rest of the sky.
If, for example, a Venus/Jupiter conjunction is, by essence, a bearer of harmony and expansion (since they are the two Great Benefics of traditional astrology), it cannot act as a miracle remedy if the rest of the celestial architecture is marked by major tensions.
A rigorous reading requires a holistic approach; one must cross-reference information: all current transits must be put into perspective with all secondary progressions and global planetary movements.
A favorable aspect can be totally neutralized, or at least attenuated, if other dynamics in the sky impose a phase of restructuring or crisis.
The astrologer must not read isolated points, but interpret a complex symphony where each note influences the harmony of the whole.
The real quality of the planets: dignities and natal condition
To understand why a transit reputed to be “positive” can prove difficult to experience in practice, one must examine the “real quality” of the planets within the birth chart.
The notions of “benefic” planets (Venus, Jupiter) or “malefic” planets (Mars, Saturn, Pluto) are merely basic tones, a first layer of interpretation that must imperatively be modulated by dignities and planetary conditions.
Regarding the influence of planetary condition, if in your birth chart Venus or Jupiter find themselves in a state of detriment, fall, or retrograde, their ability to manifest benefits in present transits is considerably reduced.
Similarly, if these planets are linked by rulership to more complex sectors of the chart, such as the 8th House (the house of crisis and transformation), their transit may translate into a form of heaviness or difficulty rather than joyful expansion.
Conversely, it is entirely possible to take a constructive advantage of aspects reputed to be difficult, because even tension aspects can have interesting potential !
A Mars/Pluto square, for example, although perceived as a major tension between two “difficult” planets, can become an engine of radical transformation and personal power if the involved planets are well-dignified in the chart.
In this case, the aspect does not come to destroy, but to act as a lever for the fulfillment of destiny.
The very nature of the transit therefore depends less on its reputation than on the structural strength of the planets that are activated and reverberating in the present.
The question of birth time rectification
Faced with a discrepancy in how transits are felt, one question often arises: does the error stem from an incorrect birth time ?
While it is true that birth time rectification is a precious tool, it primarily affects the distribution of houses and angles (Ascendant, Midheaven).
Although it may modify the interpretation of a planet’s entry into a particular house, it rarely modifies the intrinsic nature of planetary aspects themselves.
Only the fastest planets, such as the Moon or Mercury, might see their aspects tighten or loosen significantly following a minute-by-minute adjustment of the birth time.
In short, birth time rectification cannot truly reverse the fundamental nature of a transit aspect; it only refines its framework of application.
Moving towards a more structural astrology
If you feel a dissonance today between your readings and your lived experience, which is common during the learning phase of astrology, do not see this as a loss of credibility, but as the announcement of an increase in skill.
You are leaving the stage of “pre-established” interpretations to enter that of structural analysis !
Does this mean, then, that we should burn all the books that provide generic astrological interpretations of aspects ?
No, because these books simply serve as learning tools to explain a basic archetypal color, but one must learn how to nuance them later…
The true challenge for the astrologer is to learn how to decipher chains of rulership and the hierarchy of dignities, precisely so they can provide that nuance.
It is by understanding how the planets articulate with one another, beyond their generic labels, that you will find a serene, precise practice that is, above all, faithful to the complexity of the human soul… 🙂
