The intercepted signs correspond to signs that have no house cusp, while duplicated houses refer to signs that rule two house cusps.
This configuration often occurs in time-based house systems such as Placidus (see House systems).
Interceptions in astrology (or intercepted signs)
The karmic meaning of an interception may stem from a previous misuse of the intercepted signs (and therefore of their energies) whether through errors, refusal, selfishness, or excesses of various kinds in a past life.
This can result in imbalance and distortion in their expression in the present life (see the more negative expressions listed in each sign profile, and Karma in astrology).

If an interception implies a kind of bracketing of the signs involved (a withdrawal of their energies from the public stage : inhibition, blockage, frustration) this condition must be transcended by learning to fully live the intercepted signs and houses.
Their energies need to be analyzed and refined so that the native may clearly grasp the true purpose of their original, undistorted function.
Intercepted signs (which always involve opposite houses) emphasize an “axis” that partly represents our karma, a “core issue” inherited from the past (a residue of “karmic baggage”).
Either the signs involved remain passive, or their expression is distorted, frustrating, or inhibited.
They often represent a pivot point (a blockage) around which the birth chart is structured, bringing a challenge to be worked through during the individual’s life.
The meaning of an Opposition encompasses both duality (confrontation) and complementarity (cooperation).
This axis is non-polarized (opposite signs always share the same polarity), and it signifies a tension meant to lead toward structuring.
However, “non-polarized” does not prevent analysis of the Astrological Elements, modes (cardinal, fixed, mutable), quadrants below or above the horizon, East or West, the concept of Void in astrology, and so on.
The life areas involved in the interception must therefore be rebalanced, corrected, or modulated.
Intercepted signs are not absent from the birth chart; they are simply more deeply embedded in the psyche and temporarily “restrained”.
It is up to the native to attempt to release them.
These signs should be expressed exclusively through their positive qualities (see each Sign’s profile for further details).
Intercepted signs are internalized somewhat like a planetary retrograde: their energy is turned inward (reading about the effects of their ruling planet’s retrograde in birth chart can be helpful).
The meaning of an interception in the birth chart suggests a task of bringing these energies back into direct motion, meaning toward their most positive outward expressions.
While the Lunar Nodes indicate the fundamental purpose of the incarnation over the course of an entire lifetime, an interception points to a blockage to be resolved during the course of life.
Intercepted signs depend, in their interpretation, on the cusp of the preceding house; they are in fact part of it, and often largely represent it.
It is therefore important to monitor transits that activate the interceptions in any way.
As an example of interpreting an interception, if the Leo / Aquarius axis is intercepted, this may indicate that self-expression is blocked, restrained, or erased (both individually and collectively).
One must cultivate the positive qualities of Leo (creativity and love) as well as qualities of Aquarius (fraternity, originality, and idealism).
Naturally, the entire chart must be considered for a more refined analysis: angles, Houses, Aspects, and planetary Rulerships.
An intercepted planet (any planet located within an interception) will tend to “eclipse” its planetary function, producing irregular manifestations, somewhat like intermittent restraint, while at the same time fostering introspection (again, similar to a retrograde planet).
Its action is more involuntary and unconscious than that of a non-intercepted planet, which does not mean it is inactive (quite the opposite in some cases, depending on chart dominants, other aspects, etc.).
To analyze an interception, one must study both the ruling planets of the intercepted signs and the signs ruled by any intercepted planets, as well as the preceding and following cusps and their enclosures.
There are often striking and meaningful “coincidences”, such as finding the ruling planets of the intercepted signs located in the duplicated houses (or involved in some form of mutual reception), or conjunct the Lunar Nodes.
In such cases, the meaning becomes denser and more pronounced.
Analyzing these planets provides additional insight into the mechanism linking interception and duplication, and therefore into the resolution of the issue and the necessary transformations.
The development and fulfillment of the ruling planets in signs and houses will nourish the process of releasing the interception.
Keep in mind, however, that intercepted planets must radiate more strongly than others in order to compensate for the restraint imposed by the interception.
The aspects between the two ruling planets of the intercepted signs are particularly rich in meaning and shed light on the dynamics governing the core issue of the interception.
Duplications in astrology (or duplicated houses)
Duplicated houses indicate that the life areas represented by the houses are intimately connected.
The first duplicated house conditions the second: experiences and feelings associated with the first directly influence the second.
Duplicated houses are therefore co-dependent and must be approached and analyzed as pairs.
They are grounded in the same fundamental energy of the same sign, meaning that their functions and concrete manifestations share the same underlying “tone” (see the Astrological Elements in particular).
Since the astrological houses already follow a logical sequence, duplicated houses become specifically “bound” together : the first requires the second for the continuity of its expression, while the second invariably anchors itself in the first in order to draw the material necessary for its own activity.
If intercepted signs reveal a core issue, the signs of the duplicated houses partially provide a key to its resolution; they compensate, in a sense, for the intercepted signs.
However, the expression of duplicated signs must be mastered so that they do not become overly dominant, either in relation to the interception or within the chart as a whole.
Otherwise, there is a risk of repeating an excess that may karmically have given rise to the current interception.
Duplicated houses are already areas of increased concentration within the chart (two cusps close together).
It is therefore important to analyze and monitor any planets located there, as they may add additional emphasis and generate excessive activity (in the birth chart as well as through Transits).
As an example of interpreting a duplication, the duplicated house axis 5th House – 6th House / 11th House – 12th House may indicate that creativity and pleasure lead into daily work (linked 5th House – 6th House), and that collective projects and friendships give rise to profound inner questioning (linked 11th House – 12th House).
Once again, a full birth chart analysis is essential, taking into account Aspects and planetary Rulerships.
To analyze a duplication, also examine its rulerships. First, the ruling planets of the duplicated signs will indicate the energies and fields of activity that can support the duplicated houses.
Then, consider the houses ruled by any planets located in duplicated houses; these may point to a renewed level of activity in those areas and influence the resolution of the interception.
As with interception, the aspects between the two ruling planets of the duplication are rich in insight, particularly regarding the dynamics governing the resolution of the interception.
Conclusion on interceptions and duplications
Unlike the Lunar Nodes, which indicate a clear direction (an ascending movement from the South Node to the North Node) the axis of intercepted signs, like the axis of duplicated houses, is non-polarized.
Both sides of these axes must be analyzed on an equal footing, rather than as a directional progression.
Together, these two axes form a cross within the birth chart.
Symbolically, they point toward a process of re-centering: an intersection, a pause, a point of focus.
The cross represents incarnation and matter (see in particular the analysis of the houses involved; house system is the part of the chart that most directly represents the concretization of incarnation, as it’s determined precisely by the place and time of birth).
The primary role of an astrologer in any interpretation is to grasp the “fundamental intentions” of the chart, especially the primary purpose of the birth chart as a whole, encompassing all latent potentials present at birth.
In the common use of the Placidus house system, these phenomena of interception and duplication appear frequently.
Since astrology is a symbolic language, it’s essential to question their meaning (even though I always recommend cross-checking any analysis with an Equal House system centered on the Ascendant).
The concept of karma in astrology is not limited to the Lunar Nodes alone; the entire chart may, in essence, be described as “karmic”.
From an evolutionary perspective, the professional astrologer (or dedicated amateur) should overlook no detail.
