Passion-Astro-Past Lives in the Birth Chart

Birth Chart and Past Lives: Astrology as the Memory of Karma

Astrology, far more than a psychological or predictive tool, can be understood as a language of the soul, transmigrating from incarnation to incarnation.

Beneath its celestial symbols lie “invisible” narratives hidden from the uninitiated (sometimes very ancient, from a time we can scarcely imagine), the roots of which therefore do not rest solely in this single life.

Yes: all astrology is essentially “karmic”. Beacause the birth chart is not merely a snapshot of the sky at birth; it is also an inventory of what we have inherited, a coded memory of the soul’s journey, where every element is present not by chance but likely because “we have inherited it”, like a legacy of experiences we have already lived through and must now help evolve.

What I am about to discuss in this article remains admittedly quite “speculative”, but it is grounded in my personal experience and the numerous accounts I have studied of individuals recounting their experiences of past-life resurgences.

Regardless of our fundamental beliefs on the matter, we owe it to ourselves to at least explore the probability that things might indeed unfold in this way.

All Astrology Is Karmic by Nature

Even without directly invoking reincarnation, astrology operates on the basis of the birth chart, which describes a sort of “personalized psychological code”, much like what we might refer to in a genetic code.

Every planet, every aspect, every placement tells us not what we are “condemned to live through”, but rather what we have to understand, transform, or rebalance.

It’s a baggage we inherit at birth and that accompanies us throughout our entire life, acting both as a legacy of assets and of fears or blockages, which we are tasked with sublimating.

It is in this sense that we can say any astrological reading is, in a way, shedding light on this legacy.

Samsara, Karma, and Reincarnation: Essential Reminders

In Eastern traditions, the soul journeys through the cycle of Samsara, the wheel of successive births and rebirths, governed by karma.

Karma is not a punishment: it is simply the natural law by which every action (or inaction) generates an imprint, a vibration, that naturally calls forth its fruits, which we must, in one way or another, reap (sooner or later).

At what we call “death”, then, the soul does not disappear: it migrates, carrying with it certain memories, talents, wounds, and attachments, until the lesson is fully integrated (if it could not do so in the last life, it will be brought back to the table in one or more subsequent lives).

In this context, the birth chart becomes a map of what the soul “brings back with it” for this life:

  • acquired strengths (mastered and fully integrated assets, innate natural gifts)
  • areas of resistance (blockages, pain, fears, wounds, complexes)
  • and directions for evolution (the axis of sublimation, the compass of incarnation)

Having studied accounts of individuals recalling past lives, certain points recur quite frequently:

  • people can recall multiple “past lives” (sometimes well over 10, across entirely different eras and locations; there are even cases of “future lives”, but that would lead us into even further developments)
  • they are aware that their current incarnation may be particularly marked by one of these lives specifically (for various reasons, which often escape conscious awareness and their true understanding)
  • they also clearly discern that their present incarnation is a sort of “assembly” of several other incarnations (one part may come from a life in Medieval Europe, another from the Inca civilization, yet another from contemporary China, etc, etc)

We are now going to see how we can translate and articulate this astrologically…

Our Birth Chart: A Synthesis of Our Multiple Past Lives?

This is a hypothesis that does not seem so far-fetched to me if we accept the premise of past lives: what if our chart were not simply a reflection of our current personality (inherited from the family schema), but also the materialization of the assembly of several past lives ?

As if each incarnation formed a thread, and every thread of incarnation gathered in the present, finding themselves condensed into this single, current incarnation.

Every part of the birth chart could thus be like a trace or a scar from such-and-such an incarnation…

Thus, schematically, certain parts of the chart could correspond to:

  • A life where one developed great power (strong Pluto, aspects to the MC)
  • A life where one was an artist or mystic (dominant Neptune, inspired Venus)
  • A life as a warrior and a loner (powerful Mars in aspect with a Saturnian dominance)
  • A life of combat, revolt, and contestation (personal planets in tension, or a strong Uranus)
  • Etc.

The birth chart would then be a mosaic of legacies, tensions, and wisdoms that the soul has gathered in the present to continue its evolutionary path in connection with these various past elements.

This would explain why we feel certain innate affinities with specific things, behaviors, and archetypes, even since childhood, without having had the time to learn anything about them.

There are certain astrological factors in the birth chart that are directly qualified as “karmic”, such as the Lunar Nodes and the Black moon, whose sole function is precisely to help us better understand these successions of incarnation within the synthesis of what we have assembled and must develop during this life.

But since, by essence, all astrology is karmic, any planet, any aspect, can be an opportunity to question how it might color the entire evolutionary process.

Always remember the holistic principle of astrology: the birth chart is an indivisible whole, where all elements are interdependent and cannot truly be separated.

We only separate them for the purposes of astrological analysis, to break down a chart, but solely because the human brain is not capable of doing otherwise to understand and learn about something.

Therefore, anything can be meaningful in analyzing this: an emphasis in a particular house, a composite aspect that forms a sensitive signature of the birth chart, a retrograde personal planet, or certain more sensitive Shadow factors (linked to Pluto, Saturn, Chiron, etc).

There is also the particular case of the 12th House, which is reputed to be “the house of karma”, in the sense that it is at the end of the cycle, and what is found there carries above all a charge of assessment, introspection, and purging, which can be highly significant.

It can indicate a maturity, an “old soul”, who has accumulated the various planets that may occupy it, as if to highlight the final ordeal or examination in the present incarnation (a challenge of realization surrounding it).

It is attached to what we might call “karmic random access memory” (functioning somewhat like a computer’s RAM), allowing more direct and rapid access to the accumulated legacy.

Why Does This Approach to Past Lives Make Sense Today?

Understanding one’s birth chart as “trans-life baggage” allows us to have greater compassion for the difficulties we traverse, as we then better perceive their deep roots.

It can help us make sense of the “innate” talents we possess, by understanding that our innate predispositions do not come from nowhere, but may well be the fruits of a multi-millennial accumulation !

Along the same lines, it helps motivate us in the present, because we know we have the dual task of both purging as much as possible and planting as many seeds as we can, since the skills and knowledge we acquire will inevitably carry over into future lives in various ways (nothing is truly “lost”; there is continuity).

It can help us find a spiritual direction grounded in the concrete experience of the present, with a clear compass for incarnation (by being able to set achievable goals).

We know that if we manage to “untangle” a current situation by recognizing that it comes from much further back, we are truly accomplishing immense work.

Conversely, we also know that we do not want to create inextricable situations in this life, only to find them waiting for us on our doormat in the next one !

Trying to understand this legacy of past lives is not about indulging in the past or using it to excuse everything in the present, but rather about allowing ourselves a different reading of our current life, with the probability of the existence of the soul’s karmic memories that we have inherited.
