One essential function of astrology can be to help us ask the right questions !
Beneath each planet in our birth chart lies a fundamental inquiry, a kind of inner key that we all carry, but which each of us must learn to turn in our own way, through our own unique process of introspection.
Reflecting on the question posed by each planet allows us to gain a different perspective on the underlying evolutionary processes at work.
I therefore propose this approach as a way to question who we are becoming, in relation to the ruling planets of our birth chart.
Here, planet by planet, are the great existential questions whispered to us by the sky, along with a few pointers for reflecting on their fulfillment.
If you feel more drawn to a particular question, it is likely because the planet in question holds significant weight in your birth chart.
The Sun: Who am I, at heart, when I stop playing a role ?
As a force of individual radiance, it indicates the light we have come to embody, and it represents a directional compass for our existence.
Understanding it well is therefore crucial, and must be viewed in perspective with the entire span of our incarnation.
We must continually ask ourselves what actions or creations we can undertake to feel more fully aligned with our solar strengths, and thus move closer to our zodiacal archetype.
It is always beneficial to reflect on one’s solar archetype “in isolation”, independently of the other layers constituted by the other planets or the Ascendant (which relates more to our displayed social personality and can sometimes create confusion with solar forces, see what I discuss in my article on the “Sun / Ascendant” couple).
The Moon: What do I need to feel emotionally secure ?
Emotional security is something we don’t necessarily notice when we have it, but feel acutely when it is lost.
It lies beyond the realm of rationality, and is felt more “in our gut”.
It relates to where we feel “at home”, to the people with whom we can be our true selves, without pretense or artifice.
It also encompasses how we tend to react in the face of the unknown and of loss, which are vectors of insecurity and instability.
Finally, it is also what we have inherited and what we wish to transmit and perpetuate (our culture, our past, our karma) which unconsciously reassures us regarding the continuity of things…
Mercury: How do I think or analyze, and what is my mind seeking to understand ?
Mercurial energies have the dual fundamental task of shaping our natural way of perceiving the world and determining how we, in turn, project ourselves onto it.
Incidentally, to fulfill this mission, they are linked to the needs to learn, to connect with others and with the world, and (in sublimation) to teach, thereby perpetuating knowledge across generations…
Venus: What do I love and value ?
Since we tend to attract what pleases us, this conditions all our magnetic mechanisms.
This applies not only at the relational and affective level, but more broadly, in the way we define what we find gentle and harmonious.
Any act of valuing necessarily implies prioritization (a value schema) which inevitably has profound repercussions on our incarnational purposes.
Mars: Where do I direct my energy for action and self-assertion ?
Martian energies represent the principle of volition just behind solar will, and they are the spark of action at the root of all other planetary functions.
They represent what enables us to initiate realization, what motivates the initial impulse, the combativeness in the face of obstacles or the inertia that maintains the status quo.
They are linked to what gives us the desire to fight in order to make a dynamic triumph.
Jupiter: What meaning do I give to my life ?
Here we reach the threshold of profound, spiritual, metaphysical, philosophical questioning. The fundamental Jovian question could be summarized as a great: “WHY ?”
Why exactly do I get up in the morning ? What motivates me in terms of inner growth, expansive force, fundamental values ?
The act of “giving meaning to things” is truly fundamental here, just as the “absence of meaning” can prove utterly devastating and destructive if it arises…
Saturn: What do I have to build with patience, maturity, and responsibility ?
In the fable of the hare and the tortoise, Saturnian forces directly embody the latter, which (through perseverance and obstinacy) is capable of achieving success and great accomplishment.
This is the area where we focus all our structuring forces and apply an organized, strategic vision.
It is the understanding and application of delayed gratification that enables us to exercise rigor and wisdom.
It is also something that can represent a wall to climb, a fear to sublimate, a limitation to unlock…
Uranus: How do I claim my freedom ?
Freedom is a binary notion, like being pregnant: you either are, or you aren’t !
You cannot be “a little free” (or a little pregnant), and this planet is well aware of that, which is why it can be very extreme, excessive, and radical in its pursuit of independence, autonomy, and emancipation.
It will struggle greatly to make compromises that call into question its originality, even its marginality, its difference.
It can operate through sudden revelations that sometimes lead us down paths diametrically opposed to what may have felt safer, but more sclerotic, before.
Wherever it applies, it can strongly emphasize the dualistic pattern of “security / freedom,” making us understand clearly that one cannot serve two masters at once.
Neptune: What am I seeking to transcend or sublimate ?
This is the great planet of relativization in the face of the transcendent, the absolute, the universal, and thus it motivates all lofty, fundamental ideals.
We find it linked to transpersonal emotional receptivity, highly useful for artistic development, devotional practices, or work connected to caring for others.
It can also be a vector of loss or confusion, especially if its dissolving quality is too extreme and poorly framed or channeled (difficulty distinguishing between dream and reality; activation this time of the dualistic pattern “matter / spirit“).
Pluto: What must I let go of or renounce in order to be reborn, strengthened ?
This is the “cleansing” function, enabling purge and purification to ultimately support strengthening.
It places us precisely before our deep, personal inner power, in the choice we can make between what we control and what we fear losing.
The planet forces a redefinition of our attachments, of our old security patterns, and it can bring things to the surface (even unconscious and deeply buried ones) for processing.
Of course, these planetary questions will need to be modulated according to each individual’s placements in Signs and Houses.
But it remains important to understand that planets do not merely describe character traits, they also question us on how we position ourselves in relation to them !
Each planet thus poses a fundamental question and asks us to know how to answer it, also in light of the entirety of our birth chart.
By virtue of our natal energies, certain questions prove more unsettling and complex than others, but this, too, is what forms the fundamental evolutionary charge…
Understood in this way, a birth chart is not there merely to provide us with ready-made answers; it is also there to serve as a support for introspection and analysis, inviting us into dialogue with ourselves, and perhaps to better understand or bring to awareness, even ancestral familial karmic patterns.
