It is important to understand that these are global transit energies, which must always be carefully nuanced according to your birth chart. See the article Mercury in transit for a general approach; for the interpretation of your natal Mercury, refer to Mercury in signs.
This is a fast transit (around twenty days on average, excluding retrograde periods), closely accompanying our daily life and exerting a constant influence on the mind, intuition, logic, and rational thinking.
Mercury is generally considered a “neutral” planet, although it is often associated with the Logos of the Animus within the chart; in this sense, it can indicate a projection of it.
It also frequently provides information about siblings, close relatives, the immediate environment, friends, neighbors, and clients, expressing qualities that take on the tone and coloration of the sign it occupies.
Intuition, receptivity, introspection
When Mercury transits Pisces or the 12th House, the planet of intellect, mind, logic, and rationality is required to operate on more receptive, emotional, and watery foundations, drawing on intuitive and imaginative forces.
This is not really a period that favours social outward expression in the airy sense of the term (communicating, speaking, socialising), but rather one that invites an internal, psychic reassessment of one’s thoughts and feelings, and, where appropriate, a reconsideration of what may later be expressed outwardly.
A kind of end-of-cycle phase is unfolding here, carrying with it a notion of “reconfiguration” in preparation for the next cycle (Mercury transiting in the 1st House or Aries).
This can involve becoming aware of one’s current social limitations in order to transcend them later on, while listening more carefully to one’s intuitions regarding the seeds that will soon be planted.
Periods of retreat or meditation, contemplation, breathwork, contact with nature or wide open spaces are particularly important to cultivate.
Anything that can help “calm the mind” and foster inner quietude is beneficial, even if it involves a temporary withdrawal from the world.
Mercurial forces gain deeper access to the unconscious, to what is hidden or transcendent.
This can be a favourable time, for example, to consult the I Ching or another oracle, or to engage in divinatory practices.
Blended with Neptunian influences, this transit can also activate themes of forgiveness.
Mercury may touch upon feelings of guilt or responsibility, with the aim of “purging” what needs to be released.
Artistic abilities may also be heightened under this transit, as it allows for emotional expression and the translation of feelings into images and words.
It is important to follow one’s creative impulses in this regard.
On the other hand, if one needs to present something publicly or communicate in an official capacity, it is wiser to maintain a period of reflection and discretion, and to wait until Mercury enters the 1st House, where its dynamic Martian fire will be more supportive of outward projection and engagement with the world.
With a transit of retrograde Mercury in the 12th House or in Pisces, the period can feel particularly “floating” or uncertain, with a stronger need for withdrawal and a deeper level of introspection.
Patience, wisdom, and the capacity for relativisation are essential qualities to cultivate during this time.
Solitude and silence may prove more useful than grand emotional outpourings. Progress is best made with a long-term perspective, and it is important not to rush or act impulsively.
Grounding through Earth energies can be especially important during this period (for example, by looking to natal or transiting Saturn), in order to anchor in material reality what is being stirred by these subtle forces.
In any case, forces of introversion are very strongly emphasised throughout this phase.
