In astrology, everything represented in the sky carries significance as a symbol and analogy, and the order of the Planets is no exception to this rule.
The order in which we observe them empirically provides clues about the influence governing a zone of the sky.
This zone is made up of 3 planets or points, with the middle one serving as the central pivot being analyzed, while the other two act as auxiliaries, coloring and refining its influence.
What is an Astrological Framing ?
In essence, when analyzing a planet or cusp (or any point), we consider the preceding planet and the following planet, attributing to them an influence on both the planet and the zone they encompass.
A framing thus consists of a sequence of 3 planets in a defined order, and the angular distance between the first, the central, and the last planet is irrelevant.
What matters is that no external planetary energy intervenes in the middle to disrupt the influences among the three planets forming this planetary framing.
Definition of Astrological Zones in the Birth Chart
The technique of astrological framings enriches chart interpretations.
It is particularly useful because it allows us to place planets within their cycles and assign zones of influence colored by their energies.
Sometimes, influences are reduced too strictly to “points” (the precise degrees to which an orb is applied) at the expense of thinking in terms of “zones” and “cycles”.
Thinking in zones and cycles is at the heart of astrological framings.
For example, although a Trine is an exact 120° aspect connecting the same elements, some authors consider that the elemental influence outweighs the exact degree measurement.
Thus, two Fire planets may be considered in a zone-based trine, regardless of the exact degrees (within the allowable orb).
The framing theory postulates that planets have a zone of influence between them, even if they are not connected by an exact aspect and regardless of the angle separating them.
Some astrologers even consider two planets in the same sign as in Conjunction (regardless of degree), which is partly valid, as this constitutes at least a conjunction in terms of the influence of Astrological Elements on the planet (fire, earth, air, water), even if the aspect is not exact.
Moreover, planets in Opposition and beyond (180° or more) can also be part of the same framing.
The framing technique has the major advantage of encouraging us to think in zones rather than points.
It allows planets to be repositioned within their cycles and helps determine, case by case, for each framing whether the planets are in separating or applying aspects in the relevant domains.
Interpreting Framings
The focus is mainly on analyzing the Sun, Moon, Ascendant (and their Rulerships), as well as the angles : Midheaven, Descendant, and IC.
Planetary framings, because they are analyzed by zone, do not require extreme accuracy of birth time, except (and this detail is important) for framings of the Ascendant and Midheaven (and houses).
In these cases, framings can even help refine the precision of birth time.
When interpreting, always remember that the central planet is the one being analyzed, while the other two are its auxiliaries.
The central planet of the framing acts as a link between the other two; the more powerful it is within the chart, the more significant the framing.
This is why all factors must be considered when determining the chart ruler: ruler of the Ascendant, planets conjunct the angles or a focal point, planets in domicile, various rulerships, etc., are all highly significant.
Some astrologers assign a direction of interpretation for framings, zodiacal or clockwise. Which should you choose ?
Both are valid, it depends on the angle of the chart being analyzed.
- For a destiny-oriented analysis, the zodiacal order is preferred.
- For an analysis focused on personality and psychology, the clockwise direction can be relevant, especially for analyzing house cusps.
In both types of analysis, the order of planets further nuances the framing interpretation: the Sun preceded by Mars and followed by Jupiter (Jupiter/Sun/Mars) is not the same as the Sun preceded by Jupiter and followed by Mars (Mars/Sun/Jupiter); subtle differences in interpretation arise.
To simplify and give standard examples (to be nuanced):
– In the first case (Jupiter/Sun/Mars), action and desire dominate life and individuality, which will rely on beliefs, philosophy, and sociability.
– In the second case (Mars/Sun/Jupiter), sociability is more prominent; the Sun moves away from Mars toward Jupiter, with Martian energy bringing courage and dynamism, but with less impulsivity, more introspection, and greater socialization.
Regarding Sun framings, its framing by Mercury and Venus should be taken in context, as these planets are natural auxiliaries and never stray far.
Some astrologers exclude them in Sun framing analyses due to this proximity. This is partly logical; however, if another planet interposes in the trio, it can still be considered a primary significator, without ignoring which other planet comes immediately after, which may refine the framing, e.g., Jupiter/Venus/Sun/Mercury/Mars.
A framing progressing from a benefic to a malefic is generally regarded as more harmonious.
The planet closing the framing tends to express itself more strongly over time, while the central planet gradually relinquishes the influence of the first…
However, each combination can be favorable or challenging; it depends on the overall chart configuration, as each planet acts both according to its intrinsic nature and the aspects coloring or emphasizing its energy.
Framings are typically studied using the main planets, but one may also include the Lunar Nodes, Black moon, or asteroids (Chiron) to define zones.
Few studies have been conducted on these points; it largely depends on the focus of the chart study and familiarity with these planets and points.
In a standard study, I recommend sticking to the basic planets.
A retrograde planet (or several) is interpreted differently depending on its position within the framing, the direction it moves relative to the others, and the harmonious or disharmonious nature of the planets involved.
Framings of the slow-moving planets remain in place longer and are only disturbed by the Moon, Sun, or other fast-moving points.
They mainly indicate the general atmosphere, particularly in mundane astrology.
Framings are also useful for analyzing house cusps. Such a framing evolves with the Earth’s daily rotation and with Progressions, notably for the Ascendant (personality, health, vitality) and the Midheaven (socio-professional influence, achievement, self-assertion in society).
House cusps included within a planetary framing are considered influenced by that framing. For example, the Mars/Sun/Jupiter framing will be interpreted differently depending on whether it covers houses 3 to 9 or houses 10 to 4.
It is also insightful to track over time, via Transits, conjunctions between framed planets and the planets framing them.
In Synastry, it is valuable to analyze the planetary sequences of each chart; any identical, inverted, complementary, or opposing framing adds depth and nuance to the interpretation of a single planet.
