Relationship questions recur constantly in the most sought-after astrological analyses, particularly in Synastry: Is this romantic or professional encounter significant ? What is the nature of this connection ? etc.
We need to better understand the other person, what they can bring to us, as well as the potential challenges they may represent…
Structural versus Temporal
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that in humanistic, psychological, or even karmic astrology, there aren’t truly “good” or “bad” relationships, or rather, a relationship becomes “good” from the moment it is “evolutionary”, meaning from the moment it provides the individuals involved with “material” to better fulfill their life path, their incarnational purpose.
At this level, you can see that, paradoxically, a relationship might be completely “difficult and unsuccessful” on an emotional or affective level, yet still enable a major evolutionary leap for the person, provided they succeed in learning from past mistakes and avoid repeating the same relational patterns in a loop…
Who can truly say that this relationship was ultimately “bad” from an absolute perspective, if it facilitated a “shift in state”, which is, at heart, what matters most ?
Therefore, a “good relationship” (the “best” possible one) must operate, in a sense, simultaneously along two complementary angles, which we need to distinguish clearly in order to understand the nature of the relationships we enter: the structural angle and the temporal angle.
To grasp this distinction, remember that all astrological study revolves around these elements: the Birth Chart (the structural) and Forecasting (the temporal, which describes fulfillment at a given moment).
In my view, we can similarly categorize our relationships according to these two factors.
Typically, a structurally significant encounter is what we call a “karmic meeting”: there is a sense of predestination to this relationship (some cultures believe we reconnect life after life), deep bonds, obvious complementarity, mutual understanding and rapport…
Astrologically, this manifests through various significant contacts: interaspects involving the Sun, Moon, personal or transpersonal planets, karmic factors (Lunar Nodes and Black moon), anything can be meaningful, provided there is recurrence and strength, and the aspects are prominent.
This type of encounter acts reciprocally and profoundly on both individuals, enabling a series of Projections of different planetary energies, fostering osmosis, evolutionary synergy, and a symbiosis that truly benefits the fundamental karmic realization of both souls, impacting their foundations and influencing the development of their core potentials.
A temporal encounter is more complex to discern, as it could essentially be summarized as a matter of opportunity: depending on the Transits both individuals are experiencing at the moment, they mutually enable the Projections each temporarily needs along their path, in a more or less ephemeral way.
Do not assume this type of encounter and exchange is “worse”, less “pure”, or less significant than a structural meeting.
Often, a temporal encounter is highly useful (even imperative) for triggering a kind of psychological “quantum leap” that advances one’s own understanding of others and of the world.
Astrologically speaking, a temporal encounter will be characterized primarily by a predominance of contacts, recurrences, and interaspects at the level of predictive factors especially.
For example, if an individual has Uranus transiting their 7th House and then meets a “quintessential Uranian type” who enables an excellent projection for expressing those Uranian energies and discovering them anew.
Perhaps the relationship will end definitively as it began, once Uranus has progressed slightly further in the zodiac ?
But in the meantime, it will have added an important building block to the native’s evolution at the precise moment they needed it…
Obviously, these are theoretical archetypes, and most everyday relationships are a more or less pronounced blend of structural and temporal elements, since by definition we cannot step outside of time.
But I believe it’s useful to make this subtle distinction to gain a clearer understanding of relational dynamics, and to help us put into perspective what we experience: passions, losses, questioning, and also, why not, to better recognize the connections that truly matter…
