It has long been known that the various colors compose the luminous spectrum and that they “vibrate” at different frequencies, and that these vibrations “act” upon our minds, our emotions…
For example, in a room decorated with warm colors, one tends to feel a cozy, lively, welcoming atmosphere.
Interior designers also know many tricks, such as painting perpendicular walls in different shades (lighter or darker) to create an impression of altered perspective, making a room appear larger or smaller.
But the reverse is equally true: one could just as well say that our minds and emotions influence the colors we are drawn to and choose to surround ourselves with !
Cross-referencing with astrology and psychology opens the door to numerous deductions and applications…
Colors as an Extension of the Elements
The Astrological Elements are truly a foundational, capital classification in the astrological domain; they are the source of everything else.
For a long time, they have been correlated in psychological astrology with Jung’s typology of character types, among other frameworks.
It is also quite straightforward to correlate colors with these different elements, as follows:
- Fire will gather rather warm, vivid colors with strong saturation, ranging approximately from yellow to orange, through red and even to fuchsia, certain deep pinks, black and brown, and white as well
- Earth also includes browns, beige, khaki, black, all dark colors, purples, deep crimson, greens (provided they carry a certain weight, a touch of black)
- Air draws somewhat on the same palette as Earth, but in much lighter tones, more pastel, vaporous, delicate. Black is removed, and one may find yellow, green, blue, pink, gray, but in soft, understated hues, with plenty of white
- Water, finally, unfolds across the full spectrum of blues, from the palest to the deepest oceanic and navy shades, or turquoise; it also encompasses violet and black
Colors and the Planets
Likewise, one can enjoy cross-referencing different colors according to the various planets and their symbolic meanings…
- The Sun will naturally align with the colors of Fire: red, yellow, orange, high saturation, and of course gold, a highly symbolic hue…
- The Moon will fall between Water and Air: celestial blue, fairly white pastels, and silver
- Mercury, as a neutral planet, functions more to bring Air; thus it would contribute white, a lightening of other colors
- Venus would borrow colors ranging from fuchsia to primarily pink, even certain deep reds leaning toward brown, as well as certain pastels in these tonalities
- Mars logically returns to martial colors: blood red, black, warm and vivid hues, like Fire
- Jupiter would lean more toward orange and yellow, with colors that may also incorporate more white, perhaps certain blues as well
- Saturn will dwell more in Earth tonalities: brown, gray, black, rather dark colors that carry a certain weight, a density
- Uranus will favor more “electric” colors: rather vivid and bright, including in shades of blue, green, and yellow
- Neptune will adopt the codes of Water: thus all variations of blue, presumably rather deep and intense
- Pluto, finally, combines both aggressive martial colors (black, red) and Earth tones, leaning more toward violet, gray, olive drab, khaki, each time with a significant presence of black. (A small anecdote, incidentally: the planet was discovered in 1930; one might say it emerged into human consciousness at that moment, the very period when Nazism began to radiate. And one finds precisely these color codes in that ideology, whether in the black, red, and white swastika, or in the olive-drab uniforms worn by certain branches of the military)
Colors in Astrological Practice
All these connections are deeply interrelated and far from anecdotal.
I have often noticed a significant correlation between, for example, the colors of people’s clothing and their Birth Chart !
Or even between the colors they wear in the present moment and the important transits they are currently experiencing…
A personal anecdote on this subject: my grandfather fiercely detested green.
He could not stand it, not in clothing, not in décor, barely even on the lawn…
One day, he returned from the market having bought a very light, very garish (and very ugly) apple-green sweater, approximately the color he had always disliked most throughout his life, and which bore no resemblance to him whatsoever…
The entire family could not understand this kind of impulsive purchase…
At that time, he was undergoing very important Uranus transits, which would prove to be the last major transits of his life, but he knew nothing of that…
Try a little experiment for fun on yourself: look at your favorite color, what you like to wear, or how you decorate your home.
See which planetary energies these lean toward most, and there is a good chance you will find those same kinds of dominants in your birth chart !
Often, I am able to make surprising deductions based solely on these color cues, on clothing…
Now, granted, this may not be very useful if you are heading to a naturist camp on vacation next summer (you will have to fall back on the morphological deductions I mentioned a while back 😉 ), but it can be a playful starting point if you wish to discover and work with astrology in a different way… 😉
