Astrological Signs = Psychological Archetypes
In astrology, there are many recurring figures that have often been closely aligned with “classical” psychological patterns (Complexes), especially through psychological astrology, which found its momentum with the advent of Jungian psychology (Jung built important bridges between psychology and the entire esoteric tradition).
An archetype is a universal symbol, a kind of stereotype, that serves as a mold or foundation for understanding certain structures.
Archetypes are used in various fields, often to “categorize” things, and this holds true in psychology as well…
There are truly many psychological archetypes, many possible divisions and subdivisions, many patterns and intersections of patterns to detail.
Astrology is a remarkable tool that enables precisely this “cross-referencing” of archetypes and patterns, helping us understand their functioning and their interactions.
Schematically, we count 4 Astrological Elements, 12 Zodiac Signs that are analogically correlated to the 12 Houses (which some astrologers rightly call our personal zodiac), along with several planets (personal, social, and transpersonal) and various karmic factors (Lunar Nodes, Black moon, Chiron).
Our personality results from the interplay of the totality of these archetypal factors, not from a single one.
When we speak of our zodiac sign, we are referring to our Sun sign, and this represents an archetype, nothing more.
That is to say, it is a basic figure, a “fraction of humanity”, that simply represents a kind of container which will take shape according to the entirety of the Birth Chart…
We might speak of Aries in terms of its enterprising nature, its impulsivity, its boldness…
Of Taurus more in terms of its industriousness, stability, solidity, reliability, generosity, love of life…
Of Gemini in terms of its developed mind and intellect, its vivacity, logic, curiosity, and its eternally youthful aspect…
Of Cancer in terms of its sensitivity and receptivity, its need for security, its connection to emotions, to family, to home…
Of Leo in terms of its need to radiate, its warmth, nobility, but also its possessiveness and domineering tendencies…
Of Virgo in terms of its analytical mind, its need to feel useful, to devote itself to others, with perfectionism…
Of Libra in terms of its empathy, its keen social sense, its understanding of others, its need for connection with a partner…

When you have a Sun in a zodiac sign, this does not necessarily mean that you possess “the totality” of that archetype to express, because various factors can nuance, and sometimes completely “neutralize” or restrain, that archetype (one must analyze Rulerships, dominants, etc).
But this archetype, whether solar or otherwise, serves in a sense as a foundation, a “container”, onto which more complex psychological structures can be grafted… and the combinations are extremely numerous !
There are almost as many combinations as there are people.
One need only remember that this division into archetypes enables us to “categorize” and subsequently to “hierarchize” these influences, always with the aim of moving from the most general to the particular, from the collective to the personal…
