The Black moon in transit moves through a sign in about 9 months and completes a full revolution in roughly 9 years. It sits somewhere between a fast and a slow transit, meaning that throughout our life we experience a large number of Black moon aspects to our birth chart.
It’s important to note a key specificity: in my practice I mainly use the mean Black moon, which follows a specific mode of calculation and moves only in regular direct motion.
If one uses the position of the true Black moon, it undergoes large retrograde phases that plough deeply through almost the entirety of a sign. This creates a back-and-forth motion similar to any retrograde loop, with strong emphasis on its stationary phases and retrograde passages, which may activate sensitive points of the birth chart.
In its symbolism during transit, the Black moon often comes to help us “cut / conclude”. It has a sharp quality, acting as a triggering factor, a call to decision, completion, or finalisation.
It often manifests unconsciously or through a sense of fate, as something that imposes itself by the force of circumstances, something we do not choose directly, yet which is linked to a life challenge, trial, or test.
Its transit may reveal buried or unconscious material, forcing it to the surface so that we must confront it: repressed desires, fears, anger, complexes, old karmic patterns of individuality or transgenerational scripts (the “security / freedom” duality, or “matter / spirit“, or “victim / savior“, etc.).
This must always be interpreted relative to what our natal Black Moon symbolises (the Shadow it represents) because the transiting Black moon merely weaves the unfolding and sublimation of that birth imprint (it does not invent anything new but relies on its birth position, its limitations, and potentials).
Of course, we are not constantly sensitive to every Black moon’s transit (thankfully), but certain configurations demand sharper attention, such as conjunctions to important planets or angles, which are more likely to affect personality and destiny.
I have often noticed that the Conjunction aspect is the most incisive, especially when it touches major karmic factors such as the Sun or the Moon, where its action may be more intense or even violent (which is logical since the conjunction is one of the most powerful aspects in astrology).
When the Black moon transits through a house, it may not produce major external events but often intensifies inner focus and subjective experience around the themes of that house.
This is somewhat of an exception, since transits normally manifest outwardly, whereas the Black moon’s influence often remains internal and subjective.
For example, as it moves through a house one might feel internally “disturbed” in that area of life (an inner agitation pushing toward change). But this can also be a powerful engine for liberation and sublimation, always through confronting the fears it activates!
Thus the sector involved may become fertile ground for emancipation, confrontation, awareness, or reclaiming personal power.
For example, a Black moon transit through the 1st House may highlight a lack of self-confidence felt more strongly on a subjective level, while simultaneously forcing us through trials that help us move beyond it.
The “emotional charge” applied to the relevant house is also greater. As I explain in my course on planets and alchemical processes, it’s precisely this emotional charge that most effectively activates major evolutionary processes within the personality and within any particular alchemical process. This must be analysed with that in mind.
It may happen that a slow background transit is already stirring the personality around a specific alchemical process, and that the faster Black moon transit becomes the final drop that makes the cup overflow, triggering the “psychic crisis” that initiates the core process.
As with all transits, especially those of planets considered “difficult” (like Saturn or Pluto), it’s important not to fear or anticipate them excessively!
These transits are not inherently “harmful” but serve to activate the evolutionary processes we need in the present, especially through helping us cut away fears and shadows in order to transcend them.
In this sense, the Black moon transit shares similarities with Pluto, especially in its capacity for transformation and radical metamorphosis, to purge, cleanse, galvanize, and help abandon outdated personality layers (the Black moon can mark the triggering point).
The ultimate aim is to bring us closer to our true personality, who we truly are at the core, stripping away the social “personas” we adopt out of pressure, convenience, insecurity, or fear.
A crucial point is that astrology allows us to accompany this consciously. Through chart analysis we can identify where this type of evolutionary work is currently focused, and thus date it and navigate it.
Since it relates directly to a karmic factor, the transit of the Black moon must be understood over a “long time scale”, as a long-term process requiring several layers and passages (often many years) to unlock certain dynamics.
For instance, a Black moon transit conjunct the natal Sun will not be lived the same way at age 20 as at age 80, solar needs and modes of incarnation differ, and thus karmic meanings differ too.
