Jupiter leaves the Earth sign of Virgo and enters the sign of Libra on September 9, 2016, remaining there until October 10, 2017, when it moves into Scorpio.
The planet is, a priori, far more at ease in this Air element and in a sign that heralds the emergence of the collective.
In principle, it can fully develop its talents for socialization and sociability.

Need for change
Its recent transit through Virgo helped to “ground” Jupiter’s energies.
Here, the planet regains altitude as well as a dynamic of unrestrained expansiveness that is far more natural to it.
The sociable and tolerant qualities of Libra are emphasized, and its ability to connect people in every direction finds fertile ground for development.
Libra is a sign of sharing, communication, teamwork, cooperation, and even diplomacy.
Jupiter finds here an accessible field of action that encourages the expression of its good humor and natural optimism.
This can be a favorable period for honors and social recognition, for full integration within a collective, both a recognition of social values by the individual, and recognition of the individual by society.
This dynamic can also manifest on a more personal level, within a one-to-one relationship such as that of teacher and student, or in the role of being (or having) a Pygmalion.
There may also be a more mystical aspiration. With Jupiter, this is always possible, and this position supports it through its “moral” dimension and metaphysical quest: a return to the Absolute through contemplation of beauty and the transcendence of the senses, provided one can move beyond purely social consciousness.
Libra is fundamentally an artistic and aesthetic sign, under the nocturnal rulership of Venus.
The alliance and expression of the two “benefics” of traditional astrology can just as easily foster an abundance of creativity and creative output as it can encourage materialism, a certain frivolity or superficiality, and even excess, ostentatious luxury, and “bling-bling” displays… and why not seduction as well.
Venus indeed has these two facets, and her power of attraction may here prove particularly formidable, playing freely with hearts.
This period may also involve matters of justice or mediation, an active search for consensus in professional contexts, indecision around sharing or partnership, or a quest for mutual understanding at some level. It can even simply indicate a form of association (marriage, divorce, business partnership, charitable organization).
It will be necessary to reconcile different parties, listen to what each has to say, adapt, and above all… decide.
Despite its sensitivity and sociability, Libra is a cardinal sign of action; this should not be forgotten.
The potential risk here lies in a lack of limits for a planet that naturally tends toward proliferation and unchecked expansion.
However, one of Libra’s qualities is prudence, along with a search for balance and harmony, which helps to temper and restrain Jupiter’s “magnifying” effect.
Even so, with this enlarging planet, nothing should be underestimated, and possible excesses should not be taken too lightly…
Jupiter transiting Libra 2016/2017
At the beginning of Jupiter’s passage through this autumnal equinox sign, the planet is relatively spared from direct influences.
This gives it considerable freedom to express its energies fully.
Only activations from fast-moving planets, particularly Mars and Mercury, will nuance its expression.
It will be necessary to wait until Jupiter reaches the third decan for a direct influence to emerge, through an opposition to Uranus combined with a sextile to Saturn. This overall period will be creative, dynamic, and inspiring.
As a planet located beyond Earth’s orbit, Jupiter’s retrograde phase occurs when it is in opposition to the Sun.
This often corresponds to delays within socio-professional or collective frameworks. Below is the unfolding of this retrograde loop:
- November 11, 2016: 13° Libra, entry into the retrograde shadow
- November 21, 2016: exact square to Pluto at 15° Capricorn
- December 2, 2016: trine from Mars at 16° Aquarius
- December 9, 2016: station retrograde at 18° Libra
- December 23, 2016: exact opposition to retrograde Uranus at 20° Aries
- December 29, 2016: Uranus resumes direct motion
- Entry into retrograde on February 6, 2017 at 23° Libra
- February 28, 2017: reactivation of the Uranus opposition through Mars conjunct Uranus at 22° Aries
- Opposition to the Sun on April 8 at 18° Libra
- Direct station on June 9, 2017 at 13° Libra
- June 25, 2017: square from Mars at 13° Cancer
- September 7, 2017: exit from the retrograde shadow at 23° Libra
The retrograde phase itself therefore extends from February 6, 2017 until the direct station on June 9.
During this period, try to refine ongoing projects and exercise patience if things do not progress as quickly as you would like.
This retrogradation reactivates the “old” Uranus–Pluto square, which is in the process of dissolving.
Nevertheless, the Jupiter–Uranus opposition remains one of the major aspects of the period, all the more so as it is quickly triggered by a fast Mars transit.
The end of the second decan and the beginning of the third are the most impacted.
There is a strong underlying need for change, a desire to “turn the table over” or to stir things up within a social and/or family context. A stone will likely be thrown into the pond (and this situation has probably been building for some time), but beware of misjudgments.
Your fierce drive for independence is healthy, yet tensions elsewhere in the configuration may amplify confusion, hesitation, and errors.
I will not detail the activations from fast-moving planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars), as their impact depends on their significance in each individual chart. However, particular attention should likely be paid during this period to Mercury’s retrograde loops beginning in Capricorn and Taurus, as well as Venus’s retrograde in Aries.
Those most directly affected by these energies are, of course, Libras, for whom Jupiter’s return to the natal Sun (or Ascendant) marks the end of a cycle of nearly 12 years. This is a period of review for them, calling for new foundations within their social framework in order to complete their fulfillment.
The other cardinal signs are also more strongly impacted: Aries through opposition (along with the Venus retrograde mentioned), and Cancer and Capricorn through square aspects.
For everyone else, it is especially important to observe how Jupiter’s energy is expressed and which area of life is symbolized by Libra in the chart.
