Jupiter leaves the Fire of Leo and enters the sign of Virgo on August 11, 2015, remaining there until September 9, 2016, when it moves into Libra.
The planet of social and spiritual expansion enters its nocturnal sign of detriment, a position akin in nature to an Opposition (to Pisces) and a Square to its main domicile (Sagittarius).
The two energies are partly antagonistic, yet combining the best of both is not only possible, but can prove remarkably effective through complementarity.
Keep in mind that the energies described below are general and do not replace the study of your personal birth chart.
A studious and hard-working Jupiter
In astrological tradition, Jupiter is naturally associated with Air as well as Fire (through Sagittarius).
Here it encounters Earth, in the sign of Virgo, which is cerebral, analytical, meticulous (highly detail-oriented), serious, orderly, and humble, under the nocturnal rulership of Mercury.
Needless to say, this is not the most comfortable position for Jupiter’s expansive nature, nor for its optimism, luck, and exuberance.
Self-confidence may therefore be moderated, or even give way to self-doubt or underestimation.
Virgo carries an awareness of collective necessity, yet sociability is expressed through pragmatic service and maturity.
Cooperation tends to be intelligent, well thought-out, precise, and often strategic. This can be a period for developing plans that will eventually support greater social fulfillment and a more grounded assertion of personal identity.
Jupiter in Virgo introduces a form of “dynamic tension”. The planet can rely on the direct rulership of Mercury, making this a favorable configuration for work, organization, logical reasoning, calculation, memorization, and therefore for study (both learning and teaching), as well as for any activity requiring tangible results.
In this context, Jupiter’s excessive, wasteful, or inflationary tendencies can be better channeled (wastefulness in Virgo ? Hardly ! 😉).
Risk-taking is also more restrained. However, Jupiter’s grand mystical aspirations may be relegated to the background, giving way to a more “material” orientation, or at least a more disciplined and grounded expression.
Health and hygiene may also come into focus under such skies, more specifically through a heightened desire for “purity”.
Dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, or a return to physical activity may occur, sometimes by choice, sometimes due to medical necessity.
Issues of health and physiological balance take on renewed significance here.
Jupiter transiting Virgo 2015–2016
The Virgo sector had already been strongly activated by the recent transit of the Black moon since late 2014.
Jupiter now takes over, in a sense confirming the path that had already been outlined.
The planet begins its transit by entering a direct square with Saturn in Sagittarius. It also receives a trine from Pluto in Capricorn, a quincunx from Uranus in Aries, and an opposition from Neptune in Pisces.
These are powerful, long-term transformative energies at work. A latent karmic tension is forming, soon to be reinforced by the upcoming ingress of the North Node into Virgo. Jupiter in Virgo is, overall, a relatively solid position from which to face these trials with discernment.
Mars soon joins Virgo, energizing the configuration through a conjunction with Jupiter.
Jupiter, being a powerful planet, will not be easily “smothered” by Earth energies; on the contrary, it amplifies Virgo’s qualities, and Mars supplies the necessary Fire to activate them.
A conjunction between Jupiter and the North Node dominates much of this transit, especially due to Jupiter’s retrograde cycle.
This aspect can allow aspirations to take shape and become concrete (also to be considered alongside Saturn’s square).
A brief word on Jupiter’s annual retrograde phase: as a planet outside Earth’s orbit, its retrogradation occurs during its opposition to the Sun.
This often coincides with delays or reassessments in social, professional, or collective matters. Below is an outline of this retrograde loop:
- August 27, 2015 – exact conjunction with the Sun at 3° Virgo
- September 25, 2015 – Mars enters Virgo
- October 11, 2015 – North Node enters Virgo at 29° Virgo
- October 12, 2015 – entry into the retrograde shadow at 14° Virgo
- October 18, 2015 – exact conjunction with Mars at 14° Virgo
- November 9, 2015 – station retrograde at 18° Virgo
- January 8, 2016 – retrograde motion begins at 23° Virgo
- February 4, 2016 – close conjunction with the North Node at 22° Virgo (1° orb)
- March 8, 2016 – opposition to the Sun at 18° Virgo
- May 9, 2016 – station direct at 13° Virgo
- June 24, 2016 – exact conjunction with the North Node at 16° Virgo (1° orb)
- August 6, 2016 – exit from the retrograde shadow at 23° Virgo
From January 8, 2016 onward, delays may arise, or situations may require deeper analysis and reflection, encouraging temporary withdrawal from the social stage. From May 9, as Jupiter resumes direct motion through the second and third decans of Virgo, energies become more straightforward and dynamic again.
The conjunction of Jupiter with the North Node is the defining aspect of this retrograde period, reinforcing the karmic nature of this Jupiter cycle (see Lunar Nodes).
Naturally, transits from faster-moving planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars…) will also activate and nuance this journey of Jupiter through Virgo, affecting each individual differently depending on their birth chart.
Those most directly affected are Virgo natives, for whom Jupiter’s return to the natal Sun or Ascendant marks the completion of a roughly 12-year cycle, a time of review and restructuring of their social framework to support future growth.
The other mutable signs are also strongly impacted: Pisces through opposition, Gemini and Sagittarius through square.
For everyone else, it’s essential to examine how Jupiter functions in the birth chart, as well as the house ruled by Virgo.
