Transit: Saturn in Sagittarius 2014-2017

Saturn leaves the Water of Scorpio and enters the sign of Sagittarius on December 23, 2014, remaining there until December 20, 2017, when it finally returns to its domicile in Capricorn after nearly three years.
A planet that often carries an unfavorable reputation, Saturn should not be feared. There is no reason to be afraid of it, for it holds profound qualities.
Saturn is the “father” archetype, yet the formative father: firm, sometimes demanding, but one who provides structure and limits.
It is through Saturn that we learn how to function within society and integrate into the collective, like a stake supporting a plant that would otherwise grow in a wild, unstructured way.
Keep in mind that the energies described below are general in nature and do not replace the study of your birth chart.

Moral and Philosophical Rigor

With Saturn in this sign, its qualities of spiritual, moral, philosophical, religious, and even political development are strongly emphasized.

This can be a favorable period for beginning or deepening studies, writing projects, or teaching.
Time is on your side here, supporting concentration, focus, and structure.
This transit may manifest as a literal journey, or a symbolic one, an exploration, a meditation, a quest to deepen understanding.
The mind seeks to wander, to rise, to “go on pilgrimage” toward something that offers broader meaning, expands spiritual horizons, and reconnects one with essential principles and roots.

It’s also a life turning point that can bring a certain heaviness, limitations that are not always easy to live with, and at times even periods of depression, yet fundamentally formative experiences.
This transit may also coincide with legal or judicial matters, such as a lawsuit unfolding in the background through various aspects of the cycle, or administrative procedures that drag on through paperwork, requiring careful construction and organization, often with complications.

Here, Saturn is ruled by Jupiter, the other social planet, lighter and more expansive in nature, and placed in a Fire sign.
Saturn may temporarily dampen this fire, but the embers remain alive.
This can signal an alchemical “Calcinatio”, especially during the Mars retrograde loop in Sagittarius in 2016, a process of psychic purification through fire.

Between constraint, real or symbolic mourning (the end of something), and elevation, this is a deep, underlying transit.
Saturn always invites distance, seriousness, introspection, and ultimately a form of wisdom that leads, over time, to greater maturity.

Saturn Transiting Sagittarius 2014–2017

From its entry, Saturn forms a trine with Uranus in Aries and a long-term square with Neptune in Pisces.
These two background aspects accompany its entire passage through Sagittarius. The trine brings a dynamic of transformation, a spark capable of initiating a new beginning or at least creating an element of surprise.
The square to Neptune, on the other hand, can either support Saturn’s transcendent dimension (not without tension) or maintain shifting sands and illusions that may disorient the native, complicate areas of life, provoke doubt, and even weigh on health (with Chiron also forming a square in Pisces).

Through its retrograde phases, Saturn revisits the final degrees of Scorpio and then each decan of Sagittarius in turn: 2015 (first decan), 2016 (second decan), and 2017 (third decan).
Several notable events also punctuate this transit, including:

In my view, the pivotal year of this transit is truly 2016, when Saturn’s influence is likely to be most pronounced.
The year 2017, combining harmony with deep transformation, already prepares the ground for Saturn’s entry into Capricorn.
Of course, faster-moving transits will also punctuate and nuance the cycle (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and others).

Those most directly affected are, naturally, Sagittarians experiencing Saturn’s return to their natal Sun (or Ascendant), marking the end of a nearly 30-year cycle. This corresponds to a phase of assessment, completion, and harvesting, but also to the beginning of a new cycle, a fresh impulse and the establishment of new foundations.
By extension, Gemini in opposition, as well as Virgo and Pisces in square, will also feel this transit more strongly (Mutable signs).

On a more everyday level, for all signs, it’s essential to examine in your birth chart how Saturn’s energy is expressed and which sector of Sagittarius is activated.
